I’ve been so busy this week working on a myriad of creative projects! I cannot believe it’s already Friday.

I haven’t had much time to ponder any thought-provoking ideas to share with you, as I like to do.

I’m working with a new author, and her story is powerful, but we’re not quite at a point where I can share much about her work, or the book marketing that I’m doing for her… I’m also designing a coffee table book of my own art, which I’m also not quite ready to divulge too much about… and I’m applying for grants to help me grow a new project, which I’ll share more about soon. :)

So today, I’m keeping things short and sweet with some Halloween storytelling… in an ironic way.

I wrote this short story, Sugar Skull, for Halloween last year, and in honor of spooky season, I’m sharing it with you today. It’s a really scary story, but not in the way you might think. It’s fiction, based on the heartbreaking demise of a woman who came to the island, hoping for a bright, tropical, rejuvenating experience.

It happens every day here. As they say in Belize, “If you don’t listen, you’re going to feel.” And as I advise, if you’re not careful, this island will eat you alive.

I know this may sound dour, but what good story doesn’t leave you a little shaken?

I do have a writing prompt for you, though, that has nothing to do with this story… okay, maybe a little.

This week's writing prompt:

Where would you spend a month-long vacation, and why? What kind of place would you stay in? What would you plan to do? Start working on your novel? Sit alone and read your favorite books? Explore art galleries and museums? Hiking and yoga? Would you travel with anyone, or go solo and hope to meet new friends… maybe a lover? Indulge all of your senses. How will you feel when you’re away? What kind of food will you eat? How will you dress? How do you want to feel when you return?
