Short Summary

Sketches from the Heart of a Texas Artist is a creative response to the pain and suffering that occurs as a result of sexual abuse.  This story shines a light on the aftermath of the wreckage, on the introspective journey one must embark upon in efforts to overcome the darkness, depression, and feelings of self hatred that linger long after the abuse occurs.  It shines a light on what happens to our sexuality after it's been used against us, hurled in our faces, scorned and left for the wolves while shadows of despair loom over our souls, teasing and taunting us until we have no choice but to journey inward to find the path that will lead us out of darkness and into light.

The protagonist, Mona Lamar, is a jewelry designer and Dallas Design District gallery owner, whose passion and lustful vulnerability, in the wake of a series of painful events, grows with so much fervor that she is pulled by the forces of nature to overcome her greatest fears in pursuit of self actualization. Mona accepts her Hero’s Journey with conviction and doesn’t look back. As she’s chased by her shadow of despair, she hijacks a boat, sails through the Caribbean, falls in love, becomes entranced by an enchanted priestess, and receives instructions to return to her place of birth, New Orleans, to understand and accept her ultimate truths.

This novel has been a creative pursuit for the past year and a half.  I finished writing several weeks ago and now the manuscript awaits a detailed editing process before I can begin the design and layout where I will weave my fine art and jewelry designs through the pages to enhance the story with visual imagery.

With funding that I receive through this campaign, I’ll have the opportunity to bring 'Sketches from the Heart of a Texas Artist' to life in a way that allows me to truly bring my creative trifecta of literature, fine art, and jewelry full circle in a compelling and innovative fashion.

What I Need & What You Get

The funding that I need to bring this project to completion is $6000.  This project is close to the finish line.  I’m in the final steps of publication, I just need the resources to take me to the next step which includes a three part editing process, then design and layout work.  The story is complete, but it still needs another set of eyes to make sure that I've dotted my 'i's and crossed my 't's.

To thank you for your donation, in addition to a signed copy of my book, I have curated a collection of gifts from my studio to share with you as you join me on this adventure.  Beginning at the $95 donation level, I have an extra special offer.  You will receive my 'Love Necklace' with any donation $95 or above.  With every 'Love Necklace' level donation, a 'Love Necklace' will also be gifted to a woman who is receiving therapy at the Genesis Women's Shelter in Dallas, TX, as a reminder that even in the most trying times, love exists.

Of course, a looming question persists: what if I'm not able to reach my entire fundraising goal?  Will my novel sit on my harddrive, lost in a static dimension, hidden for eternity?  The answer is, No.  Even if I don’t reach my $6000 goal, I will use any funds that I'm gifted with to put toward this project and figure out how to move it forward to completion.  I believe in this project with every ounce of my being, deep down into the depths of my soul.  I know I need to do everything I can to bring it to fruition so that I can finally share it with you.

The Impact

Sketches from the Heart of a Texas Artist is a story that we can all relate to.  Throughout this novel, Mona Lamar endures the pain and triumph associated with the ebb and flow of life, just as you and I do.  For Mona, the pain is associated with sexual abuse.  I hope to shed a new light and understanding of the effects of that kind of abuse, but regardless, pain is pain.  This story offers an honest illustration of universal emotions through a raw and magical, spiritual adventure.  My intention is to remind my audience that it’s okay to be vulnerable.  It's okay to be afraid.  It’s okay to live with passion.  It’s okay feel our emotions and respond to them.  My desire is to excite my readers and ignite a sense of adventure in their souls.

Risks & Challenges

As with any creative project, challenges arise along the way.

I understand that this is a grueling process, but with your help, I’ll have the resources and support to overcome these challenges.

Sketch from Laguna Bob's on South Padre Island: Bermuda Rigged Sloop

"As I stared down the dusty, west Dallas street, certain that I had abolished the dark shadow of despair, I allowed myself a moment to revel in the tranquility of its absence.  Only for a moment, though.  Because as soon as one weight lifted from my shoulders, I was struck by another.  This wasn't over.  This would be an ongoing battle: an introspective journey in search of the shadow's ultimate cremation.  Leaning against the gallery door, my pencil placed on the hot-pressed paper of my sketchbook, I lightly sketched a conjured vision.

I looked down and saw the limned shape of a Bermuda -rigged sloop, floating in a bay as the sun hung lazily about the horizon.  I placed my sketchbook back in my bag next to my revolver.  I ran apace to my scratched up Passat, lit the engine, and headed south toward the coast.  If the island didn't have the answers I needed, then perhaps I would find them in the waters just beyond, glistening in the gulf stream, highlighting stories from my past.  If I hurried, I'd be there by moonrise."
